Know the types

Brow tidy versus reshape. A tidy follows your existing line and clears strays. A reshape changes the arch, the tail, or the thickness, and it is a different conversation — bring a photo, and expect the technician to talk you out of removing hair that will take months to return.

Single-thread versus double-thread technique. Most technicians work with one doubled, twisted thread held between the hands and the mouth. Some use two threads, or a hand-and-neck hold, which changes speed rather than result. What matters is control at the tail of the brow, where over-removal is hardest to fix.

Threading's real advantage is that nothing is applied to your skin. Wax bonds to the stratum corneum and lifts it along with the hair, which is why anyone using tretinoin, adapalene, or a strong acid regimen is told to stop days beforehand and why wax lifts skin on thin, mature, or recently sunburned areas. A thread grips only the hair, so the same appointment is available to people whose skin cannot tolerate wax. It is also fast and produces a crisp, defined edge, because the technician is removing hairs a few at a time rather than clearing a strip.

The honest limits: it stings, particularly along the brow bone and the upper lip. Hairs need to be roughly an eighth of an inch long, so you have to let them grow. A rushed technician will break hairs at the surface instead of pulling them from the follicle, which means stubble in a week rather than clean regrowth in three. And threading does not prevent ingrown hairs or folliculitis — anything that removes hair from the root can produce both.

Aftercare

Cool the area straight away. Redness and small raised bumps at the follicle are normal for a few hours. A clean cool compress or plain aloe settles it faster than anything sold at the counter.

Keep makeup off for the rest of the day. Follicle openings stay open for several hours, and brow pencil, pomade, and foundation are the most common route to a crop of small pimples two days later.

Skip heat and chlorine for 24 hours. Pools, steam rooms, hot tubs, saunas, and the direct Nevada sun all belong on the following day's list, not this one.

Pause actives on the area for a day or two. Retinoids, glycolic and salicylic acid, and benzoyl peroxide are fine to use elsewhere, but give the freshly threaded skin 24 to 48 hours.
